4) Mentor the Students
· Discuss the concepts of good character
· Help students define goals for the future
· Help them come up with realistic ways to attain goals
Evidence: Include in my portfolio a chart or graph showing the goals the students are striving to accomplish and a PowerPoint presentation on good character.
The charts and graphs presented display the information gathered from the students at Ocean Tides. I asked the boys where they thought they would be one year from now, five years from now, and what their career aspirations are in order to get them thinking about their future. Also, below is a PowerPoint presentation on good character which was the topic of one of the classes I taught for the purpose of trying to reinforce the importance of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Other than gathering information for a survey, what I learned from this objective was not anything that could be applied to the coursework that I’ve done over the years at school. What I learned is something that can directly help me in my future career as a counselor. I came to realize that not everyone likes to try to better themselves for the future. I was a little shocked to see that when I was questioning students about their goals, a few of them stated that they would be “locked up” or other things along those lines. I was also shocked that after my presentation on good character, one of the students said that he didn't want to have good character, and he didn’t care what happened to him. From this experience, I became conscious of the saying, “you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.” All you can do is be there for them if at some point they do need help and reinforce good behavior in hopes that you can impact them that way. Below, in the pdf file are charts for the student's goals broken down by age. Please take into consideration, when looking at the graphs, that students come in and out of the program regularly. The students who participated are not necessarily still in the Ocean Tides program.
The class took a short "Good Character" survey that asked different questions about trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The information below displays the percentage of the class that said they demonstrate the traits. Trustworthiness 74% Respect 66% Responsibility 71% Fairness 63% Caring 69% Citizenship 40% | ![]() ![]() ![]() |
