PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES

1) Enhance communication skills with students

Read professional research about communication skills with at risk or behaviorally challenged individuals

Use internet resources to research information about inner city violence to increase my knowledge about what some of the boys have dealt with

Evidence: Include in my portfolio a brochure that I will create that will include communication tips and rapport building techniques.

2) Increase leadership abilities

Research professional journals on leadership and discuss with an Ocean Tides teacher

Use on the job experiences and activities

Attend classes and observe teachers

Teach a class

Evidence: Include in my portfolio a lesson plan, worksheet, and homework that I will design to aid in the class I will teach.

3) Experience student interview and evaluation sessions

Talk with the Ocean Tides psychologist

Shadow and observe him

Establish secure, trusting relationships with the students whose sessions I will sit in on

Evidence: Write a paper discussing advice received from the psychologist, as well as my thoughts and feelings about the sessions. Also, include my notes and impressions regarding the interviews.

4) Mentor the Students

Discuss the concepts of good character

Help students define goals for the future

Help them to come up with realistic ways to attain goals

Evidence: Include in my portfolio a chart or graph showing the goals the students are striving to accomplish as well as a PowerPoint presentation on good character.
